My mother was an amazing person! She was a Flower Essence creator, mother, grandmother; an extremely fun and playful, enthusiastic and spontaneous, passionate woman and friend! Her love of life was filled with her curiosity in the Buddhist idea of ‘each precious life’. My mother also loved words and enjoyed reading the dictionary as a child, particularly after moving to Australia from Berlin at aged just six, and not speaking English. Her doorway to learning was through words and meanings. As a consequence, she was also a great lover of sayings and rhymes. You would often hear her come out with funny sayings you had never heard before, as well as coining her own. One she created and really believed in was:
TRUST YOUR EMOTIONS
It surprised me … because in many ways a large part of Mum’s Buddhist practice and spiritual work was focussed on balancing the emotions and not letting them ‘rule’. She often spoke about how it was our ‘job’ to learn to recognise emotions rising, and how to act and not react. As a teenager, this infuriated me … but as I got older, it really began to make sense — especially when I had children and became a mother handling toddler emotional meltdowns!
Why am I writing about this? What is the point? Well, in recent Covid lockdown times I have heard from many friends and clients’ similar statements — “I just feel so emotional” or “I feel kind of numb and just don’t feel anything”. Why is this? My mother would say the numbness relates to shock. After having experienced any kind of shock or trauma, our physical body experiences a burst of adrenalin and the fight or flight reaction kicks in; we quickly become paralysed on an emotional/mental level. As a consequence, we begin to firstly doubt our emotions and secondly no longer fully feel them because our body goes into a kind of shut down/protection mode.
On the flip side, when we are faced with another kind of scary or angry emotional situation. We can have such a strong reaction that we become overwhelmed by our own emotions, and they feel like a vast ocean of powerful waves that keep crashing over us. This can lead to depression and feelings of low blues, or confusion and severe sadness leading to tears and a strong sense of emotional overwhelm that doesn’t seem to end or find resolution.
So, what can we do? We can learn to TRUST OUR EMOTIONS. What does this mean? It means that after the moment of shock or trauma when we feel we need a massive cry or feel extreme anger rising but often don’t follow through and express the feelings rising in the hospital/police setting we have been thrown into etc. as we feel it is not appropriate. This is an important time to TRUST OUR EMOTIONS, which actually means allow them to be present, notice them and welcome them. Welcome the anger, tears, confusion, wobbles and try to trust the unusual, unsafe, uncomfortable feelings.
How can you not only TRUST OUR EMOTIONS but also welcome them? The first step is to mindfully acknowledge what they are. You can do this by talking to a friend, writing in a journal or meditating on what is going on for you. When you have identified the emotion, such as sorrow, disappointment, guilt, anger, fear … you are then able to TRUST YOUR EMOTIONS and begin to work in relationship with them. There are so many wonderful ways you can explore TRUSTING YOUR EMOTIONS such as:
